How Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Engages Every Sense of Learning
One of my favorite parts of traveling is discovering something I didn't know before. Whether it's learning about a new culture, trying an unfamiliar food, picking up a new skill, or hearing the story behind a place, those moments often become some of the most memorable parts of the journey.
As experience designers, we have an incredible opportunity to create those moments intentionally.
I believe the ways we learn and the ways we play have more in common than we might realize. The most engaging experiences layer conversation, observation, reading, hands-on interaction, and moments of discovery to spark curiosity from every angle. Each layer invites guests to engage in a different way, making the experience richer, more personal, and more meaningful.
One place I saw this beautifully executed was during a recent visit to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.
At first glance, it feels like an incredible resort with breathtaking views of animals roaming just beyond your balcony. But as I explored the property, I realized Disney wasn't only giving guests something to look at. They were inviting them to go deeper by learning through different elements and interactions.
Guests can experience the safari visually by watching zebras play, beautiful exotic birds bathe in the water, and wildlife roam just outside their rooms. Those who enjoy digging deeper can explore the "Did You Know?" signage placed throughout the property to learn more about the animals they encounter. Cast Members stationed along the safari invite guests into conversations, answering questions and sharing stories about the wildlife and conservation efforts. The lodge even encourages guests to interact physically with the environment. One of my favorite details was a beautifully carved wooden door in the lobby with a simple sign that read, "Please Touch Me… The Nupe of Nigeria believe that touching this door will send you safely into the future." It created a beautiful sensory connection to a culture thousands of miles away.
Rather than relying on a single way of presenting information, Animal Kingdom Lodge layers storytelling, conversation, reading, observation, and hands-on interaction into one cohesive experience. Learning doesn't feel separate from the stay. It becomes part of the adventure as you explore the property.
Learning is one of the greatest forms of luxury.
Luxury isn't always about expensive materials, lavish amenities, or exclusive access. Sometimes it's about leaving with something you didn't have when you arrived. A new perspective. A deeper appreciation for another culture. A story or fun fact you'll share for years to come.
It's not just about giving guests more to consume. It's about giving them more to discover.
